HOW TO AVOID A PHISHING ATTACK

What is phishing?  According to Wikipedia it is "a fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details by disguising oneself as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.  Typically carried out by email spoofing or instant messaging.  It often directs users to enter personal information at a fake website which matches the look and feel of the legitimate site."

It is important to be vigilant when using electronic devices to communicate because scammers have become increasingly smarter with technology.  Their goal is to get you to fall for their tricks so they can steal your information.

Here are 4 tips to help protect yourself against phishing:

  1. Protect your computer by using security software
  2. Protect your mobile phone by setting software to update automatically
  3. Protect your accounts by using multi-factor authentication
  4. Protect your data by backing it up
