How to protect your credit or debit card

With spring almost here, more people will be outside enjoying the beautiful weather.  This means you may need cash, gas for your vehicle, or make home improvements.  It is also the time scammers like to prey on people's credit or debit card.  When you need to use your card for a purchase check out the device before you insert your card.  Here are a few tips to help keep you safe.

  • Wiggle the card reader.  I know this sounds silly but many skimmers are made to fit over the existing slot and doesn't fit snug.  If it feels loose, report it to the company you are using it for to have them check it.
  • If you are at a gas station, check out the pumps around the one you are using.  Do they all look the same, with the same wear, tear, and colors?  If not, ask the attendant to check it out.
  • If you are required to put in a pin number when using your card, place your hand over the keypad when you are putting it in.  This way if a pinhole camera is on the credit/debit card reader the scammers won't get your pin number.
