Fraud can happen anywhere and at any time. Here are just a few ways to help protect your name against unscrupulous means.
- BE CAREFUL OF WHAT YOU GET IN THE MAIL. If you receive mail with your name and address on it for a credit card, bill, insurance, etc., shred it instead of throwing it away. Fraudsters love to dumpster dive to try and steal your identity.
- GO PAPERLESS WHEN POSSIBLE. Instead of receiving snail mail and giving someone the opportunity to look through your mailbox, go electronic. Did you kow that you can receive your banking statements, pay your bills, transfer money electronically?
- DON'T CARRY YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD. Your SSN is the gateway in to your identity. Lock it up and don't make it easy for a thief to steal it.
- BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR PRESCRIPTION BOTTLES. Before tossing your bottles in the trash, tear off and shred the label or mark out the information with a magic marker. If you don't a thief will know your name, address, and what medications are in your house.
